Acquired Disability in the Legal Profession: A Conversation about Grief, Communication, Navigation, and Continuing to Succeed Professionally (Jun. 10, 2025)

Acquired Disability in the Legal Profession: A Conversation about Grief, Communication, Navigation, and Continuing to Succeed Professionally (Jun. 10, 2025)

According to the CDC, more than 1 in 4 adults (28.7 percent) in the United States live with some type of disability. However, a 2023 report from the National Association of Law Placement (NALP), found that only 1.4% of law firm lawyers surveyed self-identified as having a disability. Further, the American Bar Association’s (ABA) 2021 Model Diversity Survey, found that attorneys with a disability are generally underreported and/or underrepresented at every level.

The ABA’s Commission on Disability Rights has started important initiatives, such its #BeCounted campaign, designed to support and encourage disability pride within the legal profession. Yet, whether and when an attorney decides to discuss or disclose their own disability remains a daunting and deeply personal journey.

Lawyers with acquired disabilities (non-congenital disabilities stemming from various sources such as traumatic accidents, diagnosis of chronic illnesses, or other life-changing events) may face even more challenges as they begin making significant life adjustments and navigating the overwhelming emotional and physical rollercoasters accompanying an acquired disability.

For this event, please join WITH as we talk to employment lawyers, diversity and disability advocates and consultants, and disabled lawyers with varied backgrounds and experience for an important conversation. We will discuss strategies for both employers and lawyers with disabilities to discuss: (i) how the ADA works; (ii) challenges in hiring and working as lawyers with disabilities; and (iii) strategies to improve the process and outcomes for all.
