Creating a truly inclusive and respectful workplace for in-house counsel and the LGBTQI+ community requires a multifaceted approach. By committing to continuous improvement, fostering an inclusive culture, and ensuring legal compliance, organizations can create a safe and supportive environment for all employees. The session will be a discussion of "Being Your Authentic Self At Work," including: 

1) Authenticity in the workplace – what does inclusivity for in-house counsel look like to be effective and sustainable?

2) Safety in the workplace – how can allies nurture and support a caring, respectful and safe working environment for the LGBTQI+ community to experience genuine inclusion

Sean Hughes (he/him)

Head of the Office of General Counsel, Australia

Vanguard Australia

Sean Hughes is the General Counsel at Vanguard Australia. Sean is the Executive Sponsor for Vanguard Australia’s OPEN network which seeks to promote an inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+ individuals and to empower allies so everyone can feel comfortable bringing their whole selves to work and thrive in their Vanguard careers.

Sean has significant experience in law, governance, regulation, financial services, wealth management and risk across multiple countries. Prior to joining Vanguard in 2023, Sean served as a Commissioner at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). Sean has previously held General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer and Chief Risk Officer roles in corporate and financial services firms, and he was the inaugural CEO of the Financial Markets Authority in New Zealand. In addition to his sponsorship role promoting LGBTQIA+ at Vanguard, Sean has a keen passion for mental health and indigenous reconciliation initiatives in the workplace.

David Brewster

David is the Chief Legal and Safety Officer at Coles, and a member of the Executive Team. David leads the legal, risk, compliance and ethical sourcing teams at Coles, as well as health and safety, injury management and employee relations. David co-chairs the Coles Pride committee responsible for LGBTI issues. David is also a board member of Corporate Mental Health Alliance Australia, a leading mental health organisation for Australian businesses.

Cameron Loughlin

Legal Director - Australia and New Zealand

Uber

Cameron leads the Uber ANZ Legal team  — a team of superstar legal professionals responsible for the Uber Group’s Mobility, Delivery, and Carshare businesses in Australia and New Zealand — looking after everything from corporate governance, product counselling and enterprise contracting, to high-stakes litigation and regulatory investigations.  Cam is a member of Uber’s ANZ Leadership Team, and am a Director of Mobility Mutual, a member-owned discretionary mutual fund providing cover for peer-to-peer car sharing as an alternative to insurance. I sit on the Board of the Mutual, and Chair the Claims Subcommittee. Cam was previously based in San Francisco working as the Global Chief of Staff for one of Uber's senior executives.  Cam is a Director and sits on the national board of the Association of Corporate Counsel Australia, is a member of the ACC GC100, and is listed in the 2023 Legal 500 GC Powerlist as well as the Doyles Guide.

Cam is a member of Uber's Pride Network, the lead of the global CLO inclusive culture strike team, and was a delegate for Uber at the Out and Equal conference for executives in Orlando, Florida, in 2023. 

Ellie Hansson

Ellie has a bachelors of laws (honours) from QUT and was admitted to the Supreme Court of Queensland in 2019. First starting as volunteer legal assistant for the LGBTI Legal service before progressing to a Junior Solicitor, Ellie developed skills in advocacy and law reform work while assisting with the ongoing casework of the Service, with a special focus on working with trans and non-binary children. 

Beyond the community sector, Ellie has worked as a legal analyst for Ashurst and as a lawyer within legal aid’s discrimination, employment and human rights team. Ellie is currently a employment & industrial relations solicitor in the employment team at Hall Payne Lawyers and represents clients in various state and federal jurisdictions across employment law and discrimination matters. 

Ellie has been an advocacy officer for Pride in Law since 2021 during such time she has worked with other Pride in law team members in Queensland and on a national level to advocate for changes affecting the rights of LGBTQIA+ people. 

Shelley Mulhern (she/her)

Shelley Mulhern (she/her) is the Director of Client Relationships ANZ.   Based in Sydney, Shelley manages the Key Accounts team specializing in provision of legal research content and workflow services to global and large law firms, courts and government, the Big4 consulting firms, the Big4 banks, and the academic sector.   Shelley is a former regional co-chair and current member of the Thomson Reuters’ Pride at Work employee network.
