For in-house lawyers, learning how to leverage law firm connections can accelerate your career in interesting and useful ways. Join Stephen Mar (Chief Legal & Administrative Officer, Odeko) and Bree Thompson (Counsel, Hearst) as they share insights and anecdotes from their in-house careers and from their recent ACC Docket article, "Law Firm Alchemy: Turning Professional Contacts into Career Gold." Topics will include:

The Webcast will be discussion style. Stephen and Bree will be sharing their experiences with Suzanne Peters (Senior Counsel, Hearst), who currently works with Bree and previously worked with Stephen at WeWork. Audience participation is encouraged!

Bree Thompson is currently serving as counsel at Hearst, a leading global, diversified information, services and media company. In her role, she provides legal guidance and support on corporate matters, primarily related to Hearst’s newspapers. Prior to joining Hearst, Ms. Thompson was the Senior Legal Counsel at Odeko Inc., a company that provides comprehensive operations solutions to local coffee shops, cafés, bakeries and other establishments.
Ms. Thompson began her career as an associate at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP and subsequently, Fenwick & West LLP, where she focused primarily on M&A transactions. Ms. Thompson received her J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2017 and her B.A. from Yale College in 2013. She was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2018.

Stephen Mar is Chief Legal & Administrative Officer at Odeko, a late-stage private company that provides comprehensive operations solutions to thousands of coffee shops, cafés and other establishments.
Stephen oversees the company’s legal, HR, comms, corporate development, corporate governance and risk functions. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the NYU Law Alumni Association and maintains an active practice consulting and advising companies (especially startups) and business and legal leaders.
Prior to Odeko, Stephen was VP, Global Head of Litigation and Investigations at WeWork, the world’s leading global flexible space provider, where he helped lead the company through a multi-year turnaround and a de-SPAC process culminating in WeWork’s public listing in October 2021. Before that, Stephen was a lawyer at Sullivan & Cromwell, where he represented multinational public companies in high-stakes litigation, investigations, and crises.

Suzanne Peters

Suzanne Peters is currently Senior Counsel at Hearst, where she leads the labor & employment team. She and her team provide legal guidance on employment matters for Hearst's 200+ business units. Prior to Hearst, she was Senior Counsel at WeWork where she led WeWork’s labor and employment team worldwide. She previously was an associate at Jackson Lewis, a leading national employment law firm.
Suzanne is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she received her BA in English (magna cum laude), and Washington and Lee University School of Law, where she received her J.D. (magna cum laude and Order of the Coif). When not working, Suzanne spends her time relaxing at the Jersey Shore and Catskill Mountains with her husband and 2 year old son.
